About Enlightened English

One thing has often bothered me in my years teaching English: reading passages, grammar exercises, and discussion questions that give learners little reason to care.

English-learning material is everywhere. But many adults want more than another exercise. They want something that stimulates their thinking and gives them a reason to use the language.

That is what led me to create Enlightened English: a place to learn English through interesting content you would want to explore even in your native language. Vocabulary and grammar matter, and they become more useful when there is something worth understanding and discussing.

The teacher behind the materials

I’m Tyler, the teacher and creator of Enlightened English. I’ve spent nearly a decade teaching English, from TOEFL instruction in Korea to online tutoring with adults. For the past year and a half, I’ve taught TOEFL online. My students have included practicing lawyers, university students and professors, and business professionals.

I have a diverse background. I graduated from law school with a Juris Doctor (JD). I’ve also worked in professional proofreading and editing. Those experiences have shaped my attention to precise language, evidence, and reasoning. Alongside teaching, I’ve spent years practicing yoga and mindfulness meditation, which inform my interest in attention, learning, and how the mind works.

How that experience shapes the lessons

The B1–C2 English lessons explore psychology, science, health, decision-making, and other subjects that help us understand ourselves and the world. They bring vocabulary, grammar, reading, listening, and speaking together around topics worth investigating. Each lesson is marked by CEFR level, from intermediate to advanced, so you can choose material that suits your level.

My TOEFL teaching brings another practical purpose to the site. The TOEFL practice materials draw on that experience and on materials I’ve tested with adult learners. They explain what each task requires, develop the language needed to respond, and help learners recognize common traps and understand why an answer works. The aim is to make preparation clear and useful while developing English skills that extend beyond the exam.

The accompanying slide decks provide additional activities, listening practice, and answer support for teachers and independent learners. They grow out of the same teaching approach: clear explanations, purposeful practice, and time to reflect on what has been learned.
