English Levels Explained B1–C2
English Levels
Enlightened English provides content for intermediate to advanced English learners—B1 to C2 on the CEFR scale. This scale is widely used worldwide to assess one’s ability to communicate effectively in English.
What is CEFR?

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is an international standard for measuring language ability, dividing learners into six levels of ability:
- A1 (beginner)—introducing oneself and asking simple questions
- A2 (elementary)—handling basic conversations and common phrases
- B1 (intermediate)—understanding of familiar topics, describing experiences, and expressing opinions
- B2 (upper-intermediate)—understanding of complex texts, speaking fluently on most topics, writing detailed essays
- C1 (advanced)—using language flexibly, expressing ideas with precision, understanding of demanding texts
- C2 (proficient)—comprehending with ease, effortlessly expressing subtle shades of meaning
Enlightened English covers the B1–C2 range, although C1 and C2 are commonly grouped together. There won’t be many standalone C2 articles as the difference between C1 and C2 lies primarily in precision, nuance, and effortlessness rather than new grammar or vocabulary.
Which level am I?
B1 (Intermediate): You can follow the main points of clear speech on familiar topics. You handle most travel situations and write simple texts about personal interests.
B2 (Upper-Intermediate): You understand the main ideas of complex texts. You interact fluently with native speakers and write clear, detailed explanations.
C1 (Advanced): You understand long, demanding texts and recognize implicit meaning. You are also able to express yourself fluently, though occasionally searching for the precise word.
C2 (Proficient): You understand virtually everything—including nuance, irony, and cultural references. The difference between C1 and C2 isn’t what you can discuss, but how you express it. At this level, you’re refining and polishing rather than building fundamentals.
Not sure where you fit? Most adult learners with a few years of English study are at either the B1 or B2 levels. Furthermore, if you’re reading this page comfortably, you’re likely B2 or above.
