GRAMMAR FOCUS

Options and requirements with can and must

Listen and Repeat sentences turn on small function words, and this grammar focus separates the two that decide whether an instruction offers a choice or states a requirement. Use can for an allowed or available action and must for a required action.

Can

[Subject] can [base verb phrase].

In instructions, can presents an action that is allowed or available. Use the base verb without to, and do not add -s after he, she, or it.

You can pay the invoice by bank transfer.

She can collect the parcel from a neighbor.

Must

[Subject] must [base verb phrase].

Use must when the action is required. The verb stays in its base form for every subject.

Applicants must include a contact number.

He must sign the delivery form.

TEST TIP

Recovery

The Campus Library lesson introduced chunking as a way to hold an unfamiliar sentence in complete meaning groups. Repeated restarts in Listen and Repeat can leave too little time to finish the sentence.

If you hesitate, continue from the words you still remember instead of repeatedly restarting the sentence. If a missing word does not return immediately, resume with the next meaning group you remember and finish. Exact repetition remains the goal; continuing helps preserve the rest of the sentence.

Breaking a sentence into meaning groups

1

time condition

When should I act?

After the glue dries,

2

main action

What should I do?

attach the frame to the wall

3

method

How?

with two screws

Continue after a hesitation

Sentence heard

After the glue dries, attach the frame to the wall with two screws.

Repeated restarting

After the glue… After the glue… After…

Brief recovery

After the glue… attach the frame to the wall with two screws.

What to notice

The speaker misses dries but resumes with the next complete meaning group. The omission remains an error; the recovery preserves the rest of the instruction.
